Two Red Pears, 5 1/2" x 12", Painted on sanded paper, Unison Pastels
I painted this from a photo in the WetCanvas reference image library back in September 2011. It was for a "Spotlight Challenge" in the Pastel Forum. I really don't like painting still life from photos, but I was pleased enough with this one. I like the color of the pears and the soft cloth they are sitting on. I used strictly Unison pastels for this. I hadn't used them in quite a while, and I forgot how nice they are. I broke a rule with this painting, the pears are "kissing", which normally makes an uncomfortable tangent. Because of the interesting cast shadow on the left pear, I think it works. Sometimes breaking the rules is a good thing, it forces you to think outside the box.

I wouldn't have even noticed the tangent if you didn't mention it Christine. I think the shadow shape connecting the two pears is what makes it work.
Thanks David. I like breaking rules, especially when it works. I think on this one it did because of that shadow shape. Pears are fun to paint, the shape and colors are great.
Oh, Chris. You are such a rebel :-) I remember this painting and I like as much now as I did them. Those pears are perfectly painted. Great interest in the shadows as well. The texture contrast adds to the painting. Did I ever tell you that I love pears?
I know Doug, such a rebel! It is fun to break the rules though, especially when it works. You love pears? I couldn't tell, you haven't painted them have you? LOL...... I've seen your pears, and I love them!
